Singing with Heart: Connecting Emotionally to Lyrics
Hello beautiful people and welcome to the very first Tips from Boyana!
Quite some time a ago, a teacher of mine once told me to sing with emotion but never while emotional. I always remembered this advice, however It took me years to truly understand it.
What sets singing apart is the emotional power of lyrics – people connect with songs because of the feelings they stir. As a singer, your job is to convey those feelings by first triggering an emotional response within yourself.
This emotional connection is essential for genuine expression, but several factors can make it difficult:
Changing Repertoire: Constantly switching songs can limit your emotional depth.
Repetitive Music: Similar chord structures can limit emotional range.
Electronic Music: Lacks the raw human emotion of acoustic music.
Personal Identity: Background and experiences shape emotional expression.
And how do you enhance Emotional Connection?
Warm-Up: Use proper techniques and scales. I will share proper warm-up techniques in upcoming Tips from Boyana.
Choose Resonant Songs: Pick songs you can emotionally connect with. Something that genuinly moves you!
Give It Time: Spend weeks with the same song to deepen the connection.
Connect to Humanity: Tap into universal human experiences and humas emotions : What brings you joy? Anger? Love? A sense of belonging?
